2019 Sand On Whyte Brings Out the Arts
Boardwalk Sand on Whyte returns to Old Strathcona this summer with an artistic theme More Than A Feeling. From June 28 – July 7, this year’s artists will be creating sand sculptures open to interpretation to different emotions.
Like its counterpart Boardwalk Ice On Whyte, the event has been focusing more and more on elevating the everyday sand castle to something much more exquisite and admirable.
The food options on site will be just as promising, as the opening weekend will have fresh-made Ohana Donuterie. Hopefully they’ll have the fresh cream-filled beignets I love so much off their food truck.
The second weekend will be hand-crafted ice cream from the Blue Giraffe Creamery. Yes, Edmonton has had hand laboured ice cream in the past from Marble Slab to Scoop N Roll, but this is a completely new experience. Blue Giraffe Creamery will be making their ice cream using liquid nitrogen. If you’ve ever had quickly frozen ice cream using liquid nitrogen, you’ll know that this is the smoothest ice cream you’ll ever try, as the ice doesn’t crystalize separately from the cream.

New this year during the opening weekend is an Edmonton Radial Railway Streetcar link to Capital Plaza at the Alberta Legislature where The Works Art & Design Festival will be happening. There’s no better family-friendly entertainment than parking in the Old Strathcona, visiting Boardwalk Sand on Whyte, grabbing a bite on Whyte Avenue, hopping on the streetcar for less than the cost of the LRT, enjoying the Works Art & Design Festival, and returning to the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market with your groceries to take home.
Besides The Works Art & Design Festival, it will be busy with other events, as the Whyte Ave Art Walk and Canada Day long weekend will happen during the event days, Rachel Notley’s annual pancake breakfast for her constituents will also take place in front of nearby The Pint this year. All of which is the perfect reason you should Complete Your Old Strathcona Experience by checking out the deals to Go As A Group, a locally-based website offering various deals and group discounts.
