Sikh Parade Full of Colour and Flavour
The Nagar Kirtan Sikh Parade is one of the biggest celebrations in Edmonton for the Sikh community. The annual event happens on the Sunday of the May long weekend and consists of a parade, multiple outlets of free food, and bright colours everywhere. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in the festivities.
The parade takes place May 22, 2016 on Mill Woods Road East from the Gurdwara Millwoods (Gurdwaras are Sikh temples) on 26 Ave and proceeds down to Mill Woods Road South where the Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha is located. From there, there’s some celebration and more food before heading back to the Gurdwara Millwoods. The parade begins at 1pm from the north, with the main stage events happening at 3pm at the south Gurdwara, and returns to the north location and ends at 5pm.
Along the route are stalls where businesses and individuals will give away food and drink to passersby, as a Sikh custom to share with the community. If you decide to step into the Gurdwaras, note that men and women will have to go through their respective sides, then use a provided head covering to enter the main hall.
