Southgate Centre Opens $93M Expansion

The most profitable mall in Alberta per square foot just got bigger! Southgate Centre opened its new extension Monday with the largest London Drugs store in Edmonton.

The new extension involved demolishing part of the old Sears space, and adding on an additional 260,000 square feet of space, with the project cost of approximately $93 million. The construction of this space began in 2020.

The expanded space has a seating area which doubles as an amphitheater to the lower level. The lower level is currently occupied by a pop-up Back-to-School Lounge with Instagrammable opportunities, games, and the ‘delightfully’ campaign which is a spin-to-win contest for patrons spending $100 or more.

All three levels of retail space are unleased, with the exception of London Drugs on the top floor. The staff claim it is the largest London Drugs store in Edmonton, and as such, they carry all models, colours, scents, flavours, and variety a product has to offer with their extra shelf space. H&M will open beneath London Drugs in the Fall.

Additional amenities include 4 escalators, an elevator, sunlit atrium, power plugs in the terraced seating area, artificial greenery, and an additional public bathroom and water fountains located beside Remedy Café.
